Pioneering a way: Transportation themed Field Trips In New England

If you're looking for some great destinations across New England that all have the same topic of transportation, here are some fun field trip ideas from water to sky, horse to train, and more.

Why study transportation as a learning theme?

In the modern world we can come and go almost whenever and however we please. We're not confined to spaces very much, but how did we get here? How did we go from inventing the wheel to being able to fly across the world in only the course of several hours?

Letting children explore the topic of transportation gives them an appreciation for how we choose to move. It also introduced them to method of transportation that maybe they don't know about, but most importantly they get to learn how thing work!

We're not just teaching children to appreciate what they see, but we're asking them to engage with it and see where they fit in the bigger picture. We're asking them to take time to understand how something was invented, how and why it works, and why it changed the world. Because even taming the horse was no simple feat and changed the course of history.

Today transportation is a global economy. If we ask our children to consider where their food was grown and how it may have gotten from one place to another, then maybe they will find a single pineapple saw many mode of transportation: farm equipment, car, truck, ship, barge, plane, and maybe more.

At the core of transportation is human connection whether it's a family vacation or global trade, therefore like a keystone species is an organism that helps define an entire ecosystem, transportation defines our modern lives.
